It isn't helping you to be more productive, you are too busy to create layouts, and it just takes up more of your time. Well, today I have some tips that might be able to help you get your bullet journal back on track!

Updated for 2024 - I have taken a few breaks from bullet journaling over the past couple years, but I always go back to it because I have found it to be the most effective planning system for me!

I started bullet journaling in 2018 and after a few months, it felt like it wasn't working for me anymore, so I went back to using a planner for a while, and then I used a combined planner/bullet journal and now I'm back to using a full bullet journal.

Over these three years, I've learned a good bit about how to make an organization system work, which in this case, we are talking about bullet journals so let's get right into the reasons why your bullet journal isn't working for you!

Knowing why your bullet journal isn't working for you is half of the battle!

6 Reasons Why Your Bullet Journal Isn't Working for You

1. Trying to Make Each Layout Perfect

Might as well jump right in with a mistake I made and still do make it sometimes! It's nice to have a perfect layout, but mistakes happen. Just look at the layout above! Even though it is a simple weekly layout, I still made a mistake.

Have you found it yet? I wrote "Mon" instead of "Fri" and I am just going to leave it as it is because it's okay and it's not going to bother me.

Your bullet journal doesn't need to be perfect and if you make mistakes, it's okay. I make mistakes in my bullet journal all of the time and I just use a white gel pen to cover them up.

2. Too Many Decorations

Going along with my first point, if you try and make every layout perfect and add a beautiful drawing, you might not want to use your bullet journal anymore because you know making a new layout is going to be time-consuming.

I learned that making my bullet journal more minimalist really helps. For the most part, I stopped drawing in my bullet journal, and I still use cursive lettering, but my layouts are more minimalist. 3. The Wrong Layouts

Maybe your bullet journal isn't working for you because you aren't using the right layouts. Try experimenting with different setups to see what works best for you. Maybe you should use weekly layouts instead of monthly layouts and daily layouts or vice versa.

Maybe you are using a ton of collection layouts, that you don't need, which brings me to my next point.

4. Making Your Bullet Journal Too Complicated

Okay, first you have to make your daily to-do list, using tasks from your weekly to-do list, and appointments from your monthly to-do list, along with filling out your habit tracker, and then your collection pages. See how this might be a little too much to keep up with?

This is why I stopped using my bullet journal the first time back in 2018. I made the system way too complicated and that is the beauty of the bullet journal system. I made some changes to my system and now it works for me!

5. You Don't Have a Routine

Your bullet journal isn't working for you because you simply don't use it and then you forget about and it ends up lying on your desk for a week or maybe even a month.

Try working your bullet journal into your daily routine. Maybe you look at it during breakfast or you write in it right when you wake up. Again, this will be different for everyone, so just find what works for you.

6. You are Using the Wrong Supplies

Maybe your pen is scratchy, or your notebook paper is rough or your pen bleeds through the paper every time you use your notebook. It just isn't enjoyable to bullet journal.

While you don't need to buy an expensive bullet journal, you should find bullet journal supplies that you like and will look forward to using.

These are the six reasons why your bullet journal isn't working for you and sometimes you just need to take a few days off from your bullet journal. I do this every now and then.

But what if your bullet journal still isn't working for you and you have taken a break from it and tried the tips on this list?

Maybe it's time to try a new organizational system. I went from bullet journaling to a planner and then back to the bullet journal. Sometimes, you are really too busy to even make a simple layout so a premade planner would work better. It's all about finding what works for you in the moment!

Pouring over a textbook at the last minute, trying to decide what you actually need to know and what you can (hopefully) safely forget about. And generally feeling unprepared even though you tried. I think you get the picture.

Study Tips for Taking Finals + Any Time in Between

If you are reading this post, you are probably a high schooler or a college student looking for tips on how to study because you want to get better grades. You need better grades. Reading this post is a great start because it shows that you are actively working on learning how to study better. Good for you!

Today, I wanted to share my best tips for studying. I'm not a professional, and I am learning new ways to study more efficiently and improve all the time, but I am a straight-A student who tries my best, and I hope you will find these tips helpful for you as well!

And now, without further ado, let's get right into the study tips! I know you might be reading this post because you are procrastinating studying right now. ;)

Study Tips You Can Use For Taking Finals + Any Time in Between

1. Plan Ahead

Okay, a very cliche general tip to start off, but this is important, and I can't stress this enough. I'm really sorry, but if you are reading this post at 3 AM because you have a final today at 8 AM, you will not have enough time to study effectively. I recommend going to bed.

And a little side note, reading your notes/studying flashcards before you go to bed, is a good way to memorize things. While you are lying in bed falling asleep, you can practice saying in your head, something you are trying to memorize, and when you wake up, you will know it better. It works for me!

You might be rolling your eyes and saying, "but a planner doesn't work for me". Don't skip this tip just yet. You can write what you are planning on studying on just a piece of paper or at least have a plan in your head of what you are going to study.

If you have time, make this list the night before. I know when I am studying for finals, I feel like I have a million things to do, and a list helps me grounded so I know what I have to do, and I don't have to stress about forgetting to study for a subject.

But do not, and I repeat do not make your to-do list on your phone. It's easy, for sure, and convenient, but clicking on Instagram or TikTok is easy and convenient too.

If you aren't super rushed, you can even prioritize your list, just in case you do not get something done.

Now that your list is written out, make sure you go to bed and get enough sleep, so you won't be tired tomorrow when you are studying.

2. Have Something to Eat

If you are going to be studying all day, then definitely eat breakfast and you can make your to-do list while you eat if needed. If you are studying during the day, having a little something to eat before you start studying is ideal.

Eating while you study, will most likely turn out to be a distraction.

Plus, if you sit down to study and then twenty minutes later you decide you are hungry. Well, guess what? If you eat before you study, then you won't be able to use this excuse to get up and do something else.

Having something to eat before you start studying, will also give you some more energy!

3. Turn Your Phone Off

Great, you have your to-do list and you are ready to study. Put your phone on silent, or even turn it off. Then put it in a different room because a five-minute break can turn into a two-hour break by just simply picking up your phone.

If by some chance, you "need" your phone for studying, you can turn off all other notifications and when you are not using your phone, put it out of arms reach so you have to walk across the room, get up from your desk, etc. to reach it.

Plus, now is the time to remove any other distractions from the environment where you are studying. Some people find music to be motivating. Other people would find it distracting. So find what works for you.

If you are using your laptop to study, keep the number of tabs you have to a minimum, and try to not switch around from studying one subject to the next. Definitely do not have YouTube or a distracting site open. If you only need one tab open, then maximize it.

4. Choosing Where to Study

You might be smiling right now as you are getting comfy in your bed to start studying. Surely, you want to be comfortable while you study, right?

Yes, but studying in your bed is not a good idea. Your bed is meant for sleeping so sitting or *gasp* maybe even lying down on your bed while studying will make you want to fall asleep. Essentially, sitting on your bed while you study is going to distract you.

So, here's the idea.

Pick a spot in your house to study where it's not going to remind you of something else. A place, which you already don't associate with something else. For example, sitting at your kitchen table will remind you of eating, and sitting on the couch in front of the TV will remind you of watching TV even if it is off.

The same applies to what you are wearing. Wear an outfit you are comfortable in, but don't wear your pajamas and leave your blanket on your bed.

5. Make Flashcards

Finally, it's time to start studying. But where to start? The first thing to figure out is if you need to have things memorized or not. Some classes will have open book finals, but if you aren't able to use the book during your test, then you will need to have those facts all memorized.

Paper flashcards are the way to go! Writing down the terms will help you remember what you need to know better than typing them on your phone.

After you have all of them written down, it is time to practice. practice. PRACTICE. As much as you can, whenever you can.

As I said before, practicing right before you go to bed and thinking about the terms as you fall asleep can help you learn terms quicker. I used this method to memorize a paragraph in one day! Well, one day and one night!

Even if you think you won't have enough time to study your flashcards, you can do them while you are eating or brushing your teeth before bed. You could even study them while you exercise. For example, doing a pushup and then flipping the card with one hand while in plank.

If you don't want to be rushed with making flashcards the week before finals, you can start at the beginning of the semester and make flashcards for each chapter as you go and practice them too.

6. Don't Procrastinate

This is why having a plan will help you. If you decide the night before that you are going to wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, and then start studying right away without turning on your phone, then you are less likely to procrastinate.

7. Take Breaks

If you are studying all day, then taking breaks is important for sure. Taking breaks though is where you can become distracted so the type of break you take is important. Grabbing a snack or a drink of water is okay, but don't eat while you study.

A great option is to exercise. Taking half an hour to exercise can check another box on your to-do list as well as giving your brain a break!

If you don't think you have enough time to take breaks, you can switch to a different subject when you feel like your brain is becoming tired, but don't switch back and forth too much or else it will be harder to concentrate.

8. Revision

2024 me here! 🤣 After being in college for two years, I have figured out the study method that has (so far) worked best for me!

Around a week before the exam, I'll spend an hour or two each day, just flipping through the textbook or online course materials, and jotting down all the main points and definitions. I recommend writing these notes down by hand, NOT TYPING. The act of actually writing down your notes is what will help you remember them.

This won't keep all the material in your brain for a long time, so it's best not to do it too early AKA the day after you studied that material in class. Though I should mention doing it the day after class will be helpful for long-term retention of materials, but then you will have to keep doing it at intervals, which is very time-consuming.

Anyway, that was a little tangent. Let's get back to how to do revision. Once, you've gone through all of your course and textbook material, you'll have a few pages (at least) of notes. I generally finish up taking these notes the morning I'm taking the exam. Guilty lol!

I'll spend my last hours before the exam, looking over my notes. It's also a great idea to look over your notes right before you go to bed the day before the test if you can. This method has gotten me the best results on comprehension/memorization tests. Give it a try and see if it works for you!

One of my favorite things about the bullet journal system is its adaptability. I can switch up my bullet journal system from month to month, or from day to day, to find what works best for me at the moment. I am switching up my planning system and I wanted to explain it so you can try it too if you are looking for a new bullet journal set up to try!

How I'm Setting Goals + Managing My To-Do List in 2021

Updated for 2024

Just a side note, I was planning on posting the second half of my 2021 bullet journal set up last week, but due to finals and studying for school, I was not able to. I am planning on posting the second half of my bullet journal set up soon and some tips on how I study in case you are interested!

With that being said, I am excited to get into how I am setting my goals for 2021 and managing my to-do list. I gave a brief overview of I how I set my goals for 2021 in the first half of my bullet journal set up, but I wanted to go more in-depth and show how I am planning on reaching each of these goals.

How I'm Setting Goals + Managing My To-Do List in 2021

1. Level 10 Life + Year in Review

Because I already went over how my Year in Review layout and my Level 10 Life layout work in the first half of my bullet journal setup, I'm not going to go over them in this post, but you can read that post, to see how both of those bullet journal pages work.

Basically, my Year in Review layout goes over what I did well in 2020 and what goals I was able to complete, and what I want to be able to improve this year.

My Level 10 Life layout is from the book The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod and it helps me to identify what I can do to improve my life. In simple terms, this layout is where I wrote down ideas of goals that I might want to do in 2021, but they weren't specific.

2. 22 Before 2022

Next, I took my ideas from my Level 10 Life layout, and I decided on 22 specific goals and habits that I wanted to start this year. You can see a picture of this layout by scrolling up.

I am focusing on setting habits this year, instead of goals that I have to do every day, so that way if I miss doing something for a day, then I can still complete that goal because I am just trying to turn it into a habit by the end of the year.

Some of my goals are to...

Learn 3000 words in French
To read 12 nonfiction books
To run 35 kilometers
The habit of eating at least 1 fruit daily
To cook at least 1 recipe a week

Next, it's time to plan out how to reach these goals month by month.

3. Master Plan

I have six pages for this layout, and each page contains two months: a column for each month. At the beginning of the month, all I have to do is look at all of my goals, and then write down what I need to do to complete a little of most of my goals. (Some of my goals I only have to do one time like running 35 kilometers)

Looking at January, you can see at the bottom I have a habit tracker. This is where I am tracking all of the habits I am trying to make this year.

Above this, I have a sort of to-do list. Some of the items on this to-do list I have to do multiple times. For the goal of cooking at least 1 recipe a week I have a small tracker below it, that I can fill in. There are five weeks in January, so I have five boxes. The number of boxes I will have will vary depending on how many weeks there are in the month.

Another of my goals is to read 12 nonfiction books. So I broke that up and am reading one book each month. I can plan out all the months in advance, or I can take this goal a month at a time just in case I don't finish a book in a month, or it takes me less than a month to finish a book.

It's not the prettiest bullet journal layout. in fact, it is very plain, but it does the trick and is very helpful!

So, am I Not Using Monthly Layouts This Year?

If you read my posts regularly, you will know that I post a plan with me for my monthly layout every month, but this year I decided that I am not going to a monthly layout for the start of the year, and I am going to see how it works out.

This is the beauty of the bullet journal system, if I don't like it, I can always go back to using monthly layouts.

This is what I am doing instead of monthly layouts.

I started testing this out at the end of December and I really liked this set up so I wanted to continue using this method. I have a whole column for every day. I can write my to-do list, which is what I mainly use it for, but I can also write down what I am grateful for on that day, and just use the column as a brain dump so I can organize my thoughts.

And I already have my master plan with the habits I am trying to create for the year, so I don't really need monthly layouts in my bullet journal right now.

Happy 2021! I am hoping that 2021 will be a better year for working on my goals than 2020 was. We are probably all looking forward to an improvement from 2020, right? I had a lot of fun setting up my bullet journal for the year and I can tell that my bullet journaling skills have improved from last year!

My 2021 Bullet Journal Setup Part 1

I haven't done a bullet journal set up post since 2018 so I am excited about this one! I used a lot of pink and went with a very minimalist design for all of these layouts.

Plus, as of right now, I am planning on doing a Part 2 as well because I definitely have more layouts to make in my new bullet journal. Most of the layouts in this post are focused on setting goals for 2021 so if you want some bullet journal layout inspiration for goal setting, then you are in the right place. :)

My 2021 Bullet Journal Notebook

I wanted to start off this post, by giving a quick review of my new bullet journal because I am using a different brand than last year. Last year, I used a Minimalism Art dotted notebook, but the binding broke halfway through the year. It was still a good notebook for the price, but because of that I wanted to try a different brand for 2021 so I paid just a little bit more and bought a Scrivwell A5 dotted notebook in pink. (I don't think the color I bought is currently being sold)

I like this notebook better than my Minimalism Art notebook. The notebook itself is a little bit wider so I have more room on each page. The paper is a true white and not cream. I also like that the paper at 120 gsm is thicker than in my other notebook and I don't have any problems with bleeding and I haven't noticed any ghosting. The dots are not too dark or too light and they match up across the pages.

It also has two bookmarks and a back pocket. I am really enjoying using it so far!

Bullet Journal Supplies Used

Crayola SuperTips - Crayola SuperTips are used on almost all of my spreads! They are great for beginners, really affordable, and there are tons of colors. If you are looking to buy some markers to use in your bullet journal, then I recommend these ones.
Ecoline Brush Pens - The Ecoline brush pens are the newest addition to my stationery collection and I really like them, but they are on the pricey side. The ink is really smooth and juicy though. For this setup, I mostly used these brush pens. :)
Black Sharpie Pen - If you have read probably any of my other posts, then you will know that I always use a black sharpie pen for writing in my bullet journal.
Tombow Dual Tip Brush Pens - Even though these ones are a little bit expensive, they are double-tipped: one side is a brush tip, and the other side has a regular pointed tip, making them good for multiple purposes.
White Gel Pen - I use a white gel pen to mark out any mistakes I make on my layouts, and while it is sometimes still a little bit noticeable, it doesn't bother me.
Mechanical Pencil - I sketch in my layouts using a pencil first to eliminate minor mistakes.
A Ruler - So I can achieve straight lines.

Now let's get onto the layouts I have added to my bullet journal. :)

1. The Cover Page

First of all, I had to have a cover page! It set's the tone for your whole bullet journal. On this page, I put the year and my name above it in a beautiful cursive that you will see on my other layouts as well because it isn't that hard to do and because I love this font.

The font is Champagne Dreams regular and it can be found on Creative Market. I usually find fonts for my bullet journal on Creative Market because they have tons of different beautiful fonts. You can use the fonts on Creative Market as inspiration for free too!

Below that, I have my personal info so if my journal is lost, it can be returned to me, and of course, my website name www.theproductivepixie.com.

2. The Index

Last year, I stopped filling out my index after a while, but this year I want to use it more. Again, I am going with a simple minimalist pink pastel theme and it is pretty easy to do!

I have three pages for my index and last year I used up one and a half pages, but I am using a three-page index again this year, to see if it works out.

3. Word of the Year

Every year, I pick a word to be my focus for the year. Last year, I picked "create" and this year I am going with "opportunity".

I found a quote with my word for the year and then I made "opportunity" stand out from the rest of the quote. The quote I picked says, "Today is your opportunity to build the tomorrow you want".

4. 2020 In Review

Before I set my goals for 2021, I wanted to review what I did well in 2020 and what I can improve on, plus my favorite memories for the year, and etc.

At the top going across, I have a box for each month where I wrote my highlights of the month and everything big that happened. Below that, I added a picture of myself. "Hello!"

I also added how many goals I completed last year, which was 12/21. I think that is pretty good because with quarantine I couldn't do some of my goals. Next to that, I have my quote for 2020 which was "The best way to predict the future is to create it".

Next to that, I have a list of the three things I want to improve in my life this year. Not surprisingly, one of them is screentime. All of us, probably want to have a little less or maybe a lot less screentime in 2021. :)

On the next page, I rated my year on a scale of 1-10 and I wrote three words that sum up the year. I wrote the three best compliments I received to help motivate myself for 2021 and I wrote a pretty long list of things I did in 2020 for the first time.

Overall, this is probably my favorite layout I have made in my new bullet journal so far.

5. Level 10 Life

The idea for this layout is from the book The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. I actually haven't read the book because I learned about the Level 10 Life spread on other bullet journaling sites, but I am planning on reading it this year because I have done Level 10 Life layouts multiple times and I find it very helpful in evaluating my own life.

Also please note, that I used the Level 10 Life layout from The Petite Planner as inspiration for mine so please check out her post about Level 10 Life, in case you want to make your own.

Next, I made my Level 10 Life layout, which is basically an evaluation of your life in ten different areas and you rate your life in those areas on a scale of 1-10 so can you see where you need to improve.

As you can see, I gave myself a two for contributing, so that is something I am definitely going to be working on this year.

After rating each area on the chart, I wrote down a list of ideas for goals for each of the ten areas. These aren't real specific goals, because I am going to narrow it down on when I set my actual goals for the year. These are just ideas.

6. Hello 2021

Yes, I did already have a cover page, but after reviewing 2020, I needed to ring in the new year so I made another one!

I did it in a very minimalist style because almost the entire page is white space and later on I might write in some positive affirmations for the year, but right now I am leaving it as it is.

7. 22 Before 2022

On the other side of the page, I have my twenty-two goals for the year. I took the ideas from my Level 10 Life layout and I picked at least one from each of my layouts and I made it specific so I can grow and improve in each of the ten areas of my life.

For example, one of my goals is to read 12 non-fiction books so I can read one each month. Another of my goals is to learn 3000 words in French on Duolingo so I will also divide that up into twelve so I can do a little bit each month.

After I complete the goal, I haven't decided what I am going to do to show that I have completed it yet.

8. Master Plan

This is my master plan of how I am going to reach each of my goals this year. I have a column for each month, so this spread is six pages and I have enough room for each month to write a list of what I need to do to complete my goals for the month.

At the bottom, I have a tracker of the habits I am working on making for 2021.

9. Yearly Overview

And the last page, I have made in my journal so far, besides my first weekly layout, is a yearly overview. Below each mini calendar, I have a space to write down the important dates of the month.

I used white gel pen on top of black marker for the headers of the mini calendars and I think it turned out pretty cute!

And that's it for the first part of my bullet journal setup! My calligraphy and bullet journal style has improved from last year and I definitely like how it looks better than last year's, but I also used more pink, which is my favorite color, and stuck to a theme!
